#सहजोक्त.

बरेच वर्षांनी बाबांसह प्रवासाचा योग आला. विमानतळावर प्रतीक्षारत होतो. बाबा सांगू लागले की लहानसा सिद्धू (त्यांचा नातू ,प्रबोधचा मुलगा ) सहज सराईतपणे विमान प्रवास करतो. त्याला बेट्याला सवय झालीय ,आमच्या वेळी नव्हतं असं . विषय निघाला ,गप्पा सुरु झाल्या. म्हटलं ,"बाबा  ,आजकाल विमान ,हॉटेल फारच कॉमन आहे . आमच्या लहानपणी तुम्ही आम्हाला रेंगीतून प्रवास करवायचे ,छकड्यातून गावी न्यायचे हेच सुख आज पारखे झाले आहे. आताशा हवेत कोणीही उडू शकतात पण किती जणांना जमिनीवर पाय रोवून चालण्याचे सुख मिळालेय ,मिळतय ,तेच खरे नशीबवान  होय."
बाबा म्हणाले ,"खरय ,जेही समोर आहे त्याचा समाधानाने उपभोग घेणे हेच खरे जीवन!"
त्यांना मग मिलर अॉफ द डे कविता आठवली . ती त्यांनी म्हणून दाखवली. या वयातही बाबांचे पाठांतर आश्चर्यकारक आहे. ती कविता अशी

The Miller of The Dee :
There dwelt a miller, hale and bold,
Beside the river Dee ;
He worked and sang from morn till night-
No lark more blithe than he ;
And this the burden of his song
Forever used to be :
“I envy nobody no, not I -
And nobody envies me !"
“Thou’rt wrong, my friend," said good King Hal,
“As wrong as wrong can be ,
For could my heart be light as thine,
I’d gladly change with thee.
And tell me now, what makes thee sing,
With voice so loud and free,
While 1 am sad, though 1 am king,
Beside the river Dee?"
The miller smiled and doffed his cap,
“I earn my bread," quoth he ;
“I love my wife, I love my friend,
I love my children three ;
1 owe no penny 1 cannot pay,
1 thank the river Dee,
That turns the mill that grinds the corn
That feeds my babes and me."
“Good Friend," said Hal, and sighed the while,
“Farewell, and happy be ;
But say no more, if thoud’st be true,
That no one envies thee ;
Thy mealy cap is worth my crown,
Thy mill my kingdom’s fee ;
Such men as thou are England's boast.
O Miller of the Dee.

या कवितेच आशय कळून मला भर्तृहरीच्या नीतिशतकातील  पुढील श्लोक आठवला .

वयमिह परितुष्टा वल्कलैस्त्वं दुकूलैः
सम इह परितोषो निर्विशेषो विशेषः।
स तु भवति दरिद्रो यस्य तृष्णा विशाला
मनसि च परितुष्टे कोऽर्थवान् को दरिद्रः॥

खरच या जगात श्रीमंत-गरीब ,
स्टँडर्ड-फालतू ,हायफाय-बेकार असे भेद वरपांगी आहेत .  खरा भेद एकच ! मनातून  तृप्त-शांत  अाणि मनातून अतृप्त-बेचैन .
बाकी मिलर अॉफ द डी काय किंवा वल्कलातील संन्यासी काय ? राजाहून तेव्हाही श्रीमंत होते ,आहेत न्  कायमच रहातीलही.
